WELLSBURG — Volunteers with the Downtown Wellsburg group are holding an event Saturday with sports competitions for various ages.
Sports Saturday will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the city’s 18th Street Park and include a 3 by 3 basketball tournament and cornhole tournament at noon and adult softball tournament (for age 16 and up) and pickleball at 2 p.m.
Johanna Weiler, who is coordinating the event with Angela Staffileno, said there also will be a jumbo Connect Four game, music, face painting and food trucks.
Vendors slated to appear include Bill’s Steaks and Shakes, Family Roots Farm, Cupcakes by Gina and Ruth Brown, while the Wellsburg Lions also will be bringing their snow cone booth.
The cost to participate is $5 per player per event.
Participants can pre-register for the sports events by e-mailing Staffileno at angelastaffileno54@gmail.com. But pre-registration isn’t required, and individuals interested in playing softball may be matched with others to form a team. Sponsors include Mark’s Carryout, Mullenbach Funeral Home, the Wellsburg Lions, Rowdy’s Car Wash and Main Street Bank.
Downtown Wellsburg is a volunteer group formed to attract interest in the city, particularly its downtown business district. At Christmas the group held the Hometown Holiday Market, an event suggested by Staffileno, outside the Wellsburg Banquet Hall.
