The wrecking ball is on the way for two abandoned properties in New Cumberland.

The Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle recently acquired a pair of dilapidated buildings along Main Street.

It's part of the BDC's ongoing quest to address the dilapidation and blight that resides in Brooke and Hancock counties.

The plan is to knock the buildings down.

"We wanted to acquire this property to eliminate the blight," said Pat Ford, executive director of the BDC. "You can see the volume of traffic that comes through this area at any given time, so we want to make sure that we work with the community to eliminate the blight, improve the streetscape, and at the same time, create catalyst that might spur additional investment in this community."

The BDC acquired the two buildings for $5,000 and estimates they will cost about $20,000 to tear down. The BDC has acquired 12 properties since 2011.
